Outreach

Salt & Light

Reaching Out

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

– Matthew 5:13-16

At CrossWay we are committed to helping one another to be what Jesus said we are. As His disciples — his “salt” and “light” — Jesus commands us to go out from the church and into our world to make other disciples (Matt.28:19; John 15:16; Acts 1:8). While everything we do as followers of Jesus has an element of “outreach” in it, much of our outreach will naturally be done outside the walls of our building.

So, what does it mean to bear witness to Jesus in our neighborhoods, our extended family, and in our vocations? And, if we have a sense of what that means and may look like, how do we encourage, instruct, and support one another in this calling? At CrossWay, while we will always look for new ways to answer and implement these questions, currently we offer the following . . .

  • Adult Education on Sunday morning offers regular teaching/training on this core commitment of loving the world in Christ’s name.
  • Formation of task-specific teams that focus on short-term “event” focused outreach, such as our Christmas card ministry to persecuted and imprisoned Christians around the world.

Missionaries

CrossWay Community has been quite active in the support of both state-side and overseas missions for over forty years. We have been privileged as a local church to send out and support many career missionaries during this time. Our missions involvement has also included sending out short-term teams to do work around the world.

If you would like to know more about our current areas/countries of focus, please give us a call or grace us with a visit. We’d love to meet you and give you an update on how we are seeking to love the world in Christ’s name in this vital area of outreach.

Service

We see ourselves as servants of Jesus Christ. Jesus said the greatest among us would be the servant. He was among us as one who serves. That means we, too, gladly serve others in his name. The forms of service may vary with the ministry, group or individual. The following are just a few of the more recent efforts of our community to serve others needs in the name of Jesus:

  • Acts of kindness
  • Food donations
  • Samaritan’s Purse project
  • Grand Rapids Pregnancy Resource Center
  • Women at Risk support
  • Meals for members in need
  • Women’s mentoring
